1.Navy Chief Admiral Sunil Lanba to commission new Naval Air Base ‘INS Kohassa’ at Diglipur

Navy Chief Admiral Sunil Lanba will commission the new Naval Air Base ‘INS Kohassa’ at Diglipur in Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The airbase will be used to handle operations of helicopters and small aircraft like the Dornier.The new airbase in the northernmost part of the Andaman Nicobar Islands will be used for both Defence and civil aircraft. Earlier, Naval Air Station at Shibpur was manned by utilizing the manpower from INS Utkrosh.

2.PM Modi Launched Pravasi Teerth Darshan Yojana

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Pravasi Teerth Darshan Yojana under which a group of Indian diaspora will be taken on a government-sponsored tour of religious places in India twice a year.People of Indian-origin aged 45 to 65 can apply can avail the benefits under the scheme.

3.Piyush Goyal gets temporary charge of Finance Ministry, may present Budget 2019-20

Railways Minister Piyush Goyal was on January 23, 2019 given temporary charge of the Union Finance Ministry. Arun Jaitley, currently on medical leave in the United States, may not present the Modi government’s last Budget on February 1, 2019. Jaitley will remain a minister without portfolio during his indisposition.

4.Karnataka CM to inaugurate Swami Vivekananda memorial in Belagavi

Karnataka Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy will inaugurate ‘Vivek Smarak’, the Swami Vivekananda Value Education and Cultural Centre in Belagavi.Swami Vivekananda had stayed in the house from October 16-18, 1892, before his sojourn to the U.S. Eleven months later, the monk would deliver the historic speech in Parliament of the World Religions in Chicago.

5.2nd World Integrated Medicine Forum 2019 starts in Goa

The 2nd World Integrated Medicine Forum 2019 on the Regulation of Homeopathic Medical Products held in Goa. AYUSH Minister Shripad Naik inaugurated the three day forum. 20 countries will participate in the event.This forum will strengthen regulatory framework worldwide, to assure that the users of Homoeopathy could have wider access to quality-assured homeopathic medicines.

6.Three Indian expats from the UAE win prestigious Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award 2019

Three Indian expats from the UAE are amongst those who won the prestigious Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award the highest honour conferred on Indian diaspora. Girish Pant, a social worker has been instrumental in rescuing several Indian sailors stranded in UAE waters.Surender Singh Kandhari, chairman of the Gurudwara Guru Nanak Darbar Sikh Temple, is a philanthropist, businessman and a long-term Dubai resident. Dr Zulekha, founder and chairperson of Zulekha Healthcare Group, who came to the UAE in 1964, is believed to be the first female practising doctor in the country.

7.China to become world’s biggest retail market in 2019: Report

China is set to overtake the United States as the world’s biggest retail market in 2019. Research firm eMarketer in a report published predicted that China’s total retail sales will grow 7.5 percent to reach $5.636 trillion in 2019, while that of the United States will grow 3.3 percent to $5.529 trillion.

8.Coast Guards of India, Japan undertake disaster control exercise in Yokohama

Coast Guards of India and Japan kicked off their disaster control, search and rescue exercises off the coast of Yokohama in Japan.Indian Coast Guard Ship ICGS Shaunak is the main Indian ship taking part in the drills. The two coast guards have been working very closely in the last two to three years after the establishment of deeper ties between both the sides at the highest political level. Japanese ships came to India last year to carry out the exercise with the Coast Guard in India.

9.Johan Botha retires from all forms of cricket

 Former South Africa all-rounder Johan Botha has announced his immediate retirement from all forms of cricket.The 36-year-old Botha, who received his Australian citizenship in 2016, failed to take a wicket during Wednesday’s nine-wicket loss to the Sydney Sixers. He had played all 10 matches for the first-place Hurricanes this season.
